World Environment Day: Research Report On The Event And Careers In The Event Industry
Part A
In the following context, I shall be expounding further on the world environment day. I shall consider several issues about the event such as its objectives, the people attending it and the stakeholders of the event among other issues (Wals, Brody, Dillon & Stevenson, 2014).
Having considered several events, I opted the event, World Environmental Day.
This is an event where the public is sensitized about environmental issues and awareness is created concerning the environment. Additionally, all environmental issues are addressed, recommendations are made and sometimes the people that have played great role in conserving the environment are awarded (Stern & Hill, 2014).
This event takes place annually, on 5th June (French, 2017). It follows a sequence where a country gets a chance to host the event where there is a theme every year.
The objectives of World Environment Day is to drive change, support action and most importantly, to create awareness among individuals (French, 2017).
Basically, anyone willing can attend the event. This day not being a public holiday, the decision on whether or not to attend the event, or even what to do during the day, lies completely on an individual (French, 2017). However, government officials, persons passionate about the environment and other stakeholders are number of those expected to attend the event.
There are several ways in which the world environment day is promoted. Firstly, there is awarding of persons that play a great role in conserving the environment (Stern & Hill, 2014). Also, there is provision of education where the general public get too understand the importance of conserving the environment. Additionally, during world Environmental Day people get to interact with others through planting of trees as well as concerts to promote the day (Team, 2015).
This being a worldwide event, there are many stakeholders such as governments, non-governmental organizations, celebrities as well as communities intending to conserve the environment (French, 2017)
There are many elements required to successfully stage such an event. Most importantly, there has to be lighting (Stern & Hill, 2014). This ensures that incase of any presentation, the attendees can well view the people presenting as well as whatever they are presenting. In addition, computer needs are highly rising with current times. Lastly, there is a need to have an adequate sound system. This is to make sure that the people can clearly hear what the featured speaker has to say (Krasny, Kalbacker, Stedman & Russ, 2015).
When organizing an event, organizers need to consider both ethical and legal issues. They need to check on the name of the event. This is to cater for disputes over who has the right to use a certain event name. Also, there can be conditions to entry of an event. They can be displayed on a ticket, on the venue or even both. They mostly give details of all the prohibited actions as well as liability issues concerning the event. There are a number of ethical issues such as maintaining professionalism. This is how people carry themselves during an event. This is in terms of information provided as well as composure (Kopnina, 2014).
Name of the event
As a result of the event there are a number of impacts such as the community gaining knowledge on matters concerning environment as well as an opportunity to go green by planting of more trees (French, 2017).
Environmental aspects were greatly addressed, with people requested to take care of the environment to avoid global warming (Goudie, 2018).
Several types of technology were used in the event, such as communication technology, which involves use of computers to transmit information.
The event has several issues of concern, major ones being crowd control, technology failure and unexpected weather.
I can progress to a role of manager. The role of a manager is to handle client’s questions, coordinate suppliers and ensure that the event runs smoothly and sticks to the budget. The manager is also expected to ensure that health, legal safety and insurance obligations are adhered to. Additionally, organization of facilities for security, car parking and traffic control are also a role of an event manager. Lastly, an event manager is expected to produce post event evaluation of an event (Goudie, 2018).
Given a chance to attend school and gain knowledge on the roles of a manager in event organization, I can develop professionally. On the other hand, with training and access to information outside the organization I can update my knowledge of this industry (Friberg, 2017).
In the event industry, there are many associations dealing with different events. They also play different roles depending on which event they deal with. Such include National Association for Catering and Events (NACE), Meetings Professionals International (MPI) and International Live Events Association (ILEA). ILEA plays a vital role of proving resources to its members and also career centers as well as their exclusive events. NACE on the other hand, gives its members a chance to attend its events and an opportunity to network within their local markets as well as meeting their neighboring peers. Apart from providing networking opportunities to its members, MPI gives its members a chance to get educational resources in person or digitally (Harms, Clifford & Cryer, 2014).
A union is an important aspect in the life of an employed person. With the help of unions, employees get to be treated well in their work places and also get fair remuneration. Also, labor unions help in airing out employees grievances to their employers (Goudie, 2018).
There exist several quality assurance schemes such as Event and Conference Company that plays a vital role in the industry (Stern & Hill, 2014). It is important to get involved with a quality assurance scheme because it ensures quality services are offered to customers. This leads to more markets in the industry. Lack of compliance can lead to legal measures being taken against the event planner (Frantz & Mayer, 2014)
With the role of an event manager, I will learn the aspect of preparing guest list, taking note of food and beverages, arranging for entertainment and managing the budget, among other aspects (Goudie, 2016).
Access to information is the best way to ensure that one is up to date (Stern & Hill, 2014). This is because you get a chance to interact with other people in the industry, hence exchanging ideas. On the other hand, one can keep his knowledge on the industry current by frequently learning what is new in the industry (Carter, 2018).
An event can fun but planning it is a hard task. Nevertheless, it has been made a bit easier with the availability of event planners where there is a chance to get someone to do all the planning.
