The small intestine absorbs the food you eat so that it can be used to carry out the processes of the body. It starts where the stomach ends and is located just beneath it.

It contains specialised structures called villi that line its walls:
Notice how there are blood vessels directly beneath the surface. This is where the digested food enters the bloodstream, from the small intestine.
